World Environment Day at Megha Food Cooperative Society – A Joint Initiative of MMCS ,Mendipathar and Madhukar Livelihood Foundation

World Environment Day was celebrated at Megha Food Cooperative Society amidst great fanfare and enthusiasm. To mark the World Environment Day theme of “Land Restoration , Desertification and Drought Resilience” with the slogan “ Our Land , Our future “ , relevant initiatives and activities were undertaken by our cluster members.

Our cluster members initiated a tree planting campaign by planting a sapling each at the CFC premises. The sole aim behind the plantation drives was to contribute significantly against the dangers of climate change, increase biodiversity in the environment and improve the overall quality of life in the area.

Similarly, outreach campaigns were conducted by the cluster members for the beneficiaries for controlling/stopping the usage of plastic, waste segregation, saving water,etc.

Overall, the objective behind marking the event was to make our members aware on the adverse effects our environment is facing in the current times and steps to combat them.

Lean Certification for Megha Food Cooperative Society

Megha Food Cooperative Society (Oyster Mushroom Cluster, Mendipathar) after successfully completing two months of training & clearing the exam has been awarded the ‘LEVEL 1 – BASIC LEAN’ certification by the MoMSME. Our cluster has received constant support and guidance from Sh. Nilesh Trivedi, DFO (DC-MSME), Tura regarding the same. Through the LEAN implementation, our SPV can & will be able to enhance the productivity, improve work quality, work safety, have a greater market outreach and can become competitive and profitable in the long run. This certification will also enable the SPV to avail several benefits imparted by the Ministry (MoMSME) such as Industry Awareness Programs, Training Programs, Handholding & Consultancy Support, Marketing Support,etc.

MEGHA FOOD COOPERATIVE SOCIETY, is the FIRST CLUSTER in entire NORTHEAST REGION (NER) to get LEAN CERTIFICATION – LEVEL 1.

Exposure Visit by EFC team and Farmers,Pynursla

An Exposure Visit by the EFC team and Oyster Mushroom Farmers’ Members from Pynursla was conducted at the Megha Food Cooperative Society premises ,Mendipathar.Awareness program cum interactive session was spread over a period of two (2) days. On the first day,Mr.Nilesh Trivedi,Asst. Director,DFO(DC-MSME) was present an interactive session was held with the farmers and the different benefits of various schemes/ programs of MSME such as registration of Udyam Adhar, LEAN certifications, ZED, ISO, BIS were explained in detail. Questions pertaining to all these were taken up and explained in detail to the farmers and all members present. Second day, an interactive session with Sr. Rose (Secretary – MMCS, IA) was organized. She spoke with the SPV member, mushroom farmers from Pnyrsula, EKH and motivated them in doing good production. She gave a presentation on how the Oyster Mushroom cluster was built over the last two years and what all work has happened on ground, how the cluster is going to benefit the mushroom farmers, the advantages of training and doing homogenous production, building standardized mushroom sheds etc. Farmers from Pynursla had an interactive session with mushroom farmers from Mendipathar. She further explained the advantage of winning the market through “power of aggregation” which the farmers will get from the CFC and the brand value it will create for the production happening at the local level. Post the interactions, a field visit to see the standardized mushroom sheds built with support from DoA, GoM was undertaken.

Visit by Mr. Nilesh Trivedi,Asst. Director,DFO (DC-MSME)

During the month, an interaction/ awareness program was organised by TA & IA together for knowledge support of the SPV members on LEAN and its advantages for the cluster. Mr. Nilesh Trivedi, Assistant Director, DFO (DC – MSME), Tura was the lead speaker during the awareness program. Team from Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), team from EKH district EFC & Mushroom farmers from Pnyrsula (EKH) also participated in the awareness program. The program commenced with an interactive and knowledge sharing session on the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ campaign which is being conducted to commemorate 75 years of Independence, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. After that, an interactive session was held with the farmers wherein the different benefits of various schemes/ programs of MSME such as registration of Udyam Adhar, LEAN certifications, ZED, ISO, BIS were explained in detail. Questions pertaining to all these were taken up and explained in detail to the farmers and all members present. Mr. Trivedi also made a visit to the CFC site for inspection and to understand the systems installed at the CFC. He had Q&A session on the project with SPV, TA & IA team members to understand the project in more detail. MBMA team along with EFC- East Khasi Hills,Meghalaya and all farmers also were part of the CFC visit & the interactions that took place.

International Yoga Day ,2023

Yoga has been practised since time immemorial for an overall healthy life. In recent times, however, there has been an increased popularity in the practice of Yoga owing to an increase in the working population, rising stress levels, anxiety issues, health deterioration, etc. And hence, to combat this stressful lifestyle, the practice of Yoga in our daily lives has become imperative.

The International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21st June every year since 2014. Yoga Day will be celebrated at our Megha Food Cooperative Society grounds with much fanfare and excitement. All our cluster farmers will participate in the grandiose event which will help them inculcate the benefits of Yoga for a better and healthier life.

WASTE-WATER TREATMENT

The “Blue Planet” refers to the blue appearance of the Earth from outer space due to 71% of the water covering the earth’s surface. Despite the fact that water makes up a large portion of the surface of the world, many areas experience water scarcity. Wastewater is one of several factors that contribute to the Earth’s water stress. One of the main by-products of operating a commercial establishment is wastewater. In order to assure environmental preservation, and the alleviation of water stress, a waste-water treatment facility is being constructed in the cluster.

Wastewater treatment is a technique designed to break down and remove impurities so that the water’s quality is enhanced and it can be released into bodies of water or into the environment without harming the ecosystem.

The wastewater treatment facility in the cluster will be used to treat the water released from the Common Facility Centre’s bag-making section. The treated water will be utilised to water plants in the garden.

Growing Mushrooms locally

Giving our farmers a medium to produce their own mushrooms is crucial to help them earn a dignified source of livelihood. Our cluster farmers are highly entrepreneurial in nature and have been actively engaged in the cultivation and production of Oyster Mushroom at their household level. An average of 100-150 bags are cultivated by every farmer. The spawn is procured locally and they are earning an average income of ₹ 25,000 per batch over and above their investment. The farmers are excited and optimistic about the Oyster Mushroom cluster and hope to improve their quality of life by reaching out to a wider market.

Farmers’ Outreach Program

The farmers’ outreach program was predominantly conducted to provide hands-on knowledge and spread awareness to the mushroom farmers of our cluster through various sessions and technical one-on-one advice on various loans and grants benefits they can avail of. Awareness sessions were held in all the cluster villages wherein the farmers were given extensive advice on capacity building, community participation, and access to finance and markets. Hoardings and banners were put up at important points in all the villages to spread more awareness and also to encourage more farmers to join the Oyster Mushroom cluster program

Farmers’ Enrollment Program

With the objective of the farmers’ welfare in mind, an Awareness cum Enrolment program was held for the farmers of Megha Food Cooperative Society to help them sign up for various social programs provided. The North Garo Hills CSCs and the District Labour Office were the key partners for the program’s execution. Enrollment in the various programs will entail several benefits such as Education benefits for the children of the cluster farmers, welfare pension for the farmers, family pension, disability pension, medical assistance, marriage assistance to the unmarried male and female farmers, other skill-building training, enrolment under various schemes such as MHIS/PMJJBY/PMSBY/PMSYM, maternity benefit to female beneficiaries, construction of houses under the PMAY scheme, etc.

The North East Food Show-2022

The NE Food Show, one of the biggest platforms for entrepreneurs and service providers in the food processing industry to connect and collaborate with hotels and hospitality chains, importers and exporters, retail purchasers, wholesalers, distributors and food epicureans, was held between 5th-7th May 2022 at Shillong.Megha Food Cooperative, in collaboration with Meghalaya Basin Development Agency, participated in the event for the 1st time with the purpose of meeting entrepreneurs,suppliers and various other stakeholders thereby providing a pathway for development of new businesses. The event provided a medium to share ideas and gather as well as disseminate knowledge and information on major issues such as sustainable food and development, food nutrition and well-being, customer habits, and business development.
